To calculate the Batter gauges (the distance between each batten) the following formula is used;
(Length - Lap) / 2
So for a 500x250 slate, to be laid with a 75mm lap, the clculation is; 500 less 75 = 425mm divided by 2 = 212mm In this case the battens shoudl be fixed 212mm apart.
